Learning NFP – a personal account by Caro, aged 35

Caro, aged 35, has been practising NFP for seven years. She shares her experiences with us.

How did you come across NFP?

After coming off the pill, I wanted to get to know my body without hormonal influences. I started looking into my cycle and then stumbled across NFP. At first, I hadn’t even considered using this method for contraception.

What convinced you?

In the first cycle after stopping the pill, I didn’t ovulate and couldn’t analyse my cycle. In the second cycle, however, I noticed changes in my cervical mucus, mid-cycle pain and a rise in temperature – practically a textbook cycle.

After over a year of reliable tracking, I decided to actually use NFP as a method of contraception. I’ve been practising it for seven years now.

What were your biggest hurdles?

At first, I was unsure whether I’d be able to track my cycles correctly even after long periods of sleep at the weekend. However, that turned out not to be a problem.

How did the people around you react?

The people around me reacted positively and with curiosity. I was surprised to discover that several women in my circle of friends were already using NFP – I wouldn’t have thought so!

What has changed as a result of NFP?

The method has led to a completely different relationship with the female body, the cycle, the hormonal system and femininity. I found this so fascinating that, as a naturopath, I’ve specialised in gynaecology.

Your tip for beginners?

“Just give it a go for a few cycles and don’t stress yourself out about it.”

To be on the safe side during the learning phase, I recommend using additional contraception such as condoms. If you’re unsure, a certified NFP counsellor can help – it’s worth every euro.
