What affects my sex drive?

Many people with a menstrual cycle notice that their sexual desire fluctuates throughout the cycle. This is no coincidence – hormones play a key role in this. And yet, libido is something entirely individual: there is no such thing as a ‘normal’ libido, only your own.

The cycle and libido

Many women experience an increased libido around the time of ovulation. This makes biological sense: during this phase, the body is geared towards reproduction. Oestrogen and a slight rise in testosterone ensure that desire increases in the middle of the cycle.

In the second half of the cycle, when progesterone predominates, libido may decrease again – particularly just before your period.

Factors affecting libido

Partnership and relationship quality

A stable, trusting relationship has a positive effect on sexual desire. Conflicts, a lack of intimacy or communication problems, on the other hand, can dampen libido.

Stress – the libido killer

Stress is one of the most common reasons for a reduced libido. When the body is in stress mode, other priorities take precedence. Stress hormones such as cortisol can directly influence sex hormones.

Relaxation and Well-being

Conversely, relaxation, good sleep and physical well-being have a positive effect on sexual desire. It is no coincidence that libido is often higher whilst on holiday.

Hormonal contraception

The pill can reduce libido. It lowers natural testosterone levels and can smooth out the cyclical fluctuations in sex hormones. Some women report that their sex drive increases noticeably after stopping the pill.

Medication and medical conditions

Certain medicines – including antidepressants, blood pressure medication and antihistamines – can affect libido. Physical and mental health conditions also play a role.
